Sea Mar Community Health Centers

Jesus Sánchez, a Board member of Sea Mar Community Health Centers, will share the story of Latino community leaders and health activists who dreamed of developing a comprehensive health center for the Latino community in Seattle, with satellite clinics in rural communities in western Washington. RSVP for Zoom info - look for it in the confirmation email!

They began in 1978 with one small clinic in the South Park neighborhood of Seattle, and today Sea Mar provides a broad array of services and programs for low-income, underserved, and uninsured communities in 13 Washington counties, specializing in services to the Latino population.

In our May presentation, we heard from the former Secretary of Health from Rhode Island, Michael Fine, about the national movement for community-based primary care clinics. In our June presentation, we heard from the former Secretary of Health from Washington state, Bruce Miyahara, about the International Community Health Services that offers services to the Asian and Pacific Islander population of King County. This month we will take another look at democracy in action, as our state’s Latino community stepped up to create Sea Mar Community Health Centers.

Jesus has served in Public Administration for a majority of his career. Beginning as an appointee of Governor Spellman, as the Assistant Director, for the State Department of Motor Vehicles in 1982. He went on to serve in King County Government as the Director of the Department of Executive Administration, under County Executive Tim Hill. In addition to that appointment, he also served as the Director of the Kingdome, working with the Seattle Seahawks and the Seattle Mariners. Additionally, he served as the City of Shoreline’s Public Works Manager and Capital Projects Manager completing City of Shoreline’s first City Hall. Most recently, he served under Governor Inslee as Director Office for Regulatory Innovation.

Mr. Sanchez also worked with Sea Mar in 1983 for brief period, before moving on into his passion for Public Service. However, Jesus has been an ardent supporter of SEA MAR for well over 35 years as a volunteer in campaign fundraising for student scholarships and serving on the SEA MAR Board of Directors. Currently, Jesus is the Co-Chair of the SEAMAR Charity Golf Tournament for the last 12 years providing educational scholarships to Latino youth throughout Washington State.
