Join Us in Olympia for the Poor People's Campaign Rally for Universal Healthcare on June 4

Much of what happens to hurt poor people happens in state capitols, not in the Congress. Healthcare is blocked in state capitols. Voting laws are written in state capitols. Denial of living wages happens in state capitols. Cutting money from public education happens in both federal and state, but so much of it happens at the state level. -- Reverend Dr. William Barber

Rev. Dr. Barber, founder of Moral Mondays in North Carolina, has taken the movement nationwide and is focusing on state action -- including in Olympia. Every week has a theme. For the Monday, June 4th Rally it's Environmental Degradation and Universal Healthcare.  Find us at the Capitol with our signs and banner! Details here.

Organize & Network with Advocates at the Healthcare-NOW! Single Payer Strategy Conference

Creative Strategies for Moving State Actions Forward
June 22-24 - Minneapolis

The annual Single Payer Strategy Conference is always an inspiring event.  With a focus on both the national campaign and the individual state-based single payer campaigns, there will be ample opportunity to learn what other states are doing, discuss organizing strategies, as we network with other activists from across the country. HCFA-WA will be participating as presenters, and several Board members are attending. Read more.

Much Gratitude for GiveBig Donations & Office Furniture

You all rock! We appreciate the generous GiveBIG donations for our work to secure universal healthcare coverage for all Washingtonians. If you missed GiveBIG, it's never too late to give. Click here to donate. We can't do it without you!

Last month we asked for donations to help us set up our new office — and you delivered. We haven’t had to purchase much of anything for our new office. We’ve received donations of desks, chairs, storage units, telephones. All put to good use.

We are especially thankful for the volunteers who helped move the furniture. It’s been amazing.

How You Can Help: Tutta Bella Eat & Greet, Tabling, and Speaking Engagements

Here are some immediate ways to help:

Tutta Bella Eat and Greet. We have a range of needs from showing up early to help set up and greet attendees, to making ten phone calls to supporters in the 8th CD personally inviting them to attend the event. If any of these interest you, please reach out to our Volunteer Coordinator, Erica Nealious-Grall at [email protected]

Tabling at Farmers Markets & Summer Events. If you enjoy talking to people about how to achieve universal healthcare coverage for Washington residents, please contact the Outreach Team at [email protected] and sign up for a 2-hour shift.

Speaking Engagements. We have been giving presentations before a wide range of groups: the League of Women Voters of Pullman, Horizon House in Seattle, Spokane Public Library, and the West Seattle Democratic Women. Coming up, we will participate on a panel on single player at the UW, present to the NAACP in Everett, and to the Washington State Medical Association later this summer. If you belong to a group that would like to learn more about the state of health care in Washington state and our 2020 Strategic Plan for Winning Universal Healthcare Coverage in Washington State, please email us at [email protected].

Healthcare News You Can Use

Government By and For Big Pharma. Trump promised to rein in drug prices, but what did he do? Robert Reich explains and it is astonishing. The US pays higher prices for drugs than anywhere in the world. The Trump fix? Side with Big Pharma and make it harder for all countries to negotiate prices. Higher drug prices (and profits) globally!

When Credit Scores Become Casualties of Health Care. Here's an article that reminds us all that we are under constant economic threat from our health insurance system.

Massive billing schemes at rural hospitals? Things are bad enough for rural hospitals, and now, this article reports, they are "attractive targets for schemes that have generated nearly half a billion dollars in allegedly fraudulent billing."
