Healthcare News You Can Use
"My Focus Should Be Staying Healthy and Preventing Another Heart Attack"
The latest installment of the Kaiser Health News and NPR Bill of the Month series highlights an outrageous medical billing story that could happen to anyone.
Drew Calver, a high school teacher, swim coach, and young father in Austin, Texas, suffered a heart attack, went to the nearest ER and spent four days in the hospital. The insurer paid $55,000 and then Drew was billed for $109,000. The bill was full of padded line items such as a $200 blood test. After this story was brought to light -- a year after the hospitalization -- the hospital lowered the bill to $332.29! Read the story here. See the CBS This Morning coverage here,
Texas Judge Could End the Affordable Care Act Any Day Now. The fight to end the ACA has moved from Congress to state courts. Twenty conservative states have filed a lawsuit challenging the constitutionality of the ACA. A federal judge in Texas will rule on the constitutionality -- including pre-existing condition protections, a hallmark of the ACA. Meanwhile, Maryland has filed an injunction that would require the government to continue enforcing the ACA.
